PHONEMES FOR 3D CGI CHARACTER
MODELING AND ANIMATION
For those of you that have searched in vain on the net for realistic phoneme poses, search no farther!  I too have done those searches and have come up with only three sites that were of moderate help.  This site has a good, albeit VERY exagerated, set of phoneme shapes of just the mouth, while this site is great for those wanting anime style characters.  For those doing cartoon 2D cell animation, this site might be just what you're looking for.

However, by gleaning from these sites and studying my own formation of sounds in a mirror while tweeking on a model, I've decided to present the net this set of 18 phoneme poses.  Typically, 8 to 14 poses is all one needs for good lip sync, but 18 phonemes gives you that much more detail and more natural results.

All but two of the poses were created from a base model in Lightwave 3D 6.0 using its great set of tools with their all new falloff modes, especially wieght map, radial, and point radial.  The other two were created by mixing phonemes together in Joe Alter's incredible LipService program.  For example, mixing AH and OO made OH, and EE and AH made EH.

Of course, nothing is better than a full motion smaple, so my work-in-progress is available from the link here.   The movie is a 1.3 MB download and requires the DivX mpeg4 codec, giving you a near- DVD quality, 640 x 480 screen size image!  You can get this Free codec here!   Enjoy and let me know if this info has helped you.
